Milton Parc: luttes pour le droit au logement // Citizen struggles for housing justice

This walking tour will introduce you to the story of the Milton Parc neighbourhood and its many community and tenant organising initiatives, past and present. In particular, we will highlight the tenant movement to save the neighbourhood and then form the biggest community housing project in Canada (the Milton Parc Community), which includes cooperative and non-profit housing and community owned commercial spaces. It will also share about current tenant organising, led by the Syndicat des Locataires Autonome de Montréal - Montreal Autonomous Tenants' Union (SLAM-MATU), a direct-democracy tenants union that uses builds strong relationships among neighbours and uses direct action to unionize buildings, pressure landlords into lowering rents, doing repairs and maintenance, and to prevent evictions. We will also share about historical community control and ecology movements, including the founding of the Montreal Urban Ecology Centre, the removal of the Pine & Parc highway interchange, the saving of the Strathearn Centre for cultural workshops, the saving of the Notman Gardens and Lucia Kowaluk Park, and other initiatives. We will present current projects and volunteering opportunities, including: - the mobilizations for the Hotel-Dieu and Royal Victoria Hospitals, - our food bank and community kitchen (every Friday afternoon and evening), - solidarity initiatives with the indigenous homelessness community (including cohabitation initiatives with Comm-Un and meal distributions every Saturday 11am–12pm), - the solidarity cooperative cafe-bistro Bar Milton Parc, - community gardens (Saturdays 1pm), - and the community library. The tour will be led by Samuel Helguero, resident and activist involved in the CCMP, the tenants’ union, and the community library. MEETING POINT: Parc Lucia Kowaluk (south east corner of Parc and Pine) (in front of Bar des Pins 3714 Parc) Free of charge. All are welcome to attend. Registration is encouraged but optional. This tour will be about 1 hour and 30 minutes, including sitting breaks, followed by snacks and drinks for those who want to chat more. For questions: ccmp.miltonparc@gmail.com, 438-979-4122.
